Conquering Cabin Fever: How CBD Could Help with Stress While Stuck at Home

Being at home is great — unless it’s 24/7 with the same bunch of people (or completely alone)! COVID-19 has definitely taken humanity off guard and now people are having to adjust to a new “normal.” If being on lockdown is stressing you out, cannabidiol (CBD) anxiety studies show that CBD oil could help you find your balance and get some rest. Read on to learn about CBD and stress to see how this natural compound could help you to regain your sanity while reducing your life to the four walls of your home.

Can CBD Reduce Stress & Anxiety?

When you think about the stress of a caged animal, it’s not hard to understand why many of us are feeling more anxious right now. A lack of exercise, entire days spent with housemates and family members who may or may not rub us the wrong way, income cuts, and job losses across the country place an extra strain on our mental health — and it doesn’t look like things will change anytime soon.

Fortunately, CBD anxiety study results from official databases suggest that CBD oil for stress could help to decrease anxiety. Here are a couple of good examples:

CBD Anxiety and Parkinson’s Study

A study published in February 2020 examined the effects of CBD for seniors with Parkinson’s Disease versus a placebo for visible anxiety and tremor markers. They found that a dosage of 300mg per day over 15 days reduced the anxiety levels of the CBD group and also decreased the tremor amplitude when the participants were put in an anxiety-inducing, public speaking situation.

CBD and Stress in Healthy Volunteers

Another CBD anxiety study that was published in 2004 took 10 healthy male volunteers and measured regional cerebral blood flow at rest and then again 90 minutes after ingesting 400mg of CBD or a placebo. They found that the group that ingested CBD had decreased anxiety levels and increased mental sedation compared to the placebo group. They also observed that the greatest activity after taking CBD could be seen in the limbic and paralimbic parts of the brain — the areas involved in emotional management, motivation, and goal setting. As this CBD anxiety study mentions, worrying a little less (i.e. “increased mental sedation”) could definitely be helpful in these trying times!

CBD Could Improve Your Sleep

Whether stress is keeping you awake at night or you’re simply not tired enough to sleep after being inside all day, CBD anxiety studies show that cannabidiol could function as an herbal aid for sleep. In 2019, a retrospective clinical case series at a psychiatric clinic examined the long-term effects of CBD on the patients’ anxiety and sleep scores. What they found was that anxiety was reduced and sleep scores were immediately improved in the first month, but in the months after, long term sleep benefits fluctuated.

The good news is that you might immediately sleep better when you start taking CBD, but it’s wise to look at other factors that might be impeding your sleep because, as we can see from this CBD anxiety study, CBD isn’t always a long-term solution.

CBD Could Fight Depression

CBD and stress is one thing, but what if you’re actually heading towards feelings of despair? Coud CBD oil products help to fight depressive thoughts and feelings? Unlike the CBD anxiety studies above which studied human subjects, some studies involving animal models could give us some answers here:

Effect of CBD on Wistar-Kyoto Rats

In 2016, a study was published that examined the effect of CBD on the “depressive-like” Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rat at doses of 15, 30, and 45 mg/kg. After receiving CBD or the placebo, the rats were then subjected to three different tests to see if the CBD would increase their interest or activity level. What they found was that the CBD increased the rats’ interest in treats at 30 mg/kg, heightened their exploration of a novel object at 45 mg/kg, and boosted their general activity level at a dose of 15 mg/kg.

If translated to humans, these results could mean that CBD can help people with depressive symptoms to regain a certain amount of interest in life and become more active. Even when you’re stuck at home, staying active and interested is still extremely important!

Importance of Serotonin for CBD Uptake

A later study in 2018 (just before the CBD anxiety and sleep study mentioned in the last section) added an important insight to the previous animal model by examining the effects of serotonin and noradrenaline on the antidepressant effects of CBD. What they discovered was that the effectiveness of CBD as an antidepressant was dependent on the levels of serotonin in the central nervous system (CNS).

Fortunately, boosting your serotonin levels can be done easily and naturally — and we would recommend trying these suggestions during lockdown even if you’re not interested in CBD:

  • Expose yourself to plenty of daylight (including 10 to 15 minutes of direct sun).
  • Get some regular aerobic exercise.
  • Exchange 20-minute massages with a family member or housemate twice a week.
  • Think about things that make you happy.
  • Eat probiotic-rich foods or take a probiotic supplement.
  • Combine proteins with carbohydrates at each meal.

CBD Could Help You to Feel Less Afraid

Finding the research interesting so far? Here’s one more tidbit to add to your general knowledge: The final way that anxiety, CBD, and stress are linked is through the mechanism of fear! Remember when the COVID-19 pandemic started and people were saying that the real pandemic was fear itself? As it turns out, CBD anxiety study results suggest that cannabidiol can help to reduce your fear levels — which, in turn, actually boosts your immune system!

A 2008 rat study on cannabidiol and fear showed that CBD lowered the anxiety levels of intentionally stressed rats and helped them to forget fear-filled memories more quickly and permanently. These results were confirmed by a fear-focused CBD anxiety study in 2016. As you can see here, focusing on positive emotions and awe in particular (rather than fear) has a huge impact on your immunity and general wellbeing — so take the time to watch the sunrise (or set) out of your window and see the stress, fear, and sickness in your life begin to melt away!
