“Kratom” is a word that you might have heard in natural health circles or on the news. But what is kratom? Where does it come from?
A Bio-Active Tree from the Southeast Asian Rainforest
Kratom or Mitragyna speciosa is a tall tree from the coffee (Rubiaceae) family that grows in the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia. The leaves contain bioactive alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine and have been used medicinally in Asia and Africa since at least the nineteenth century.
In its native region, kratom grows in the rainforest areas of Central and Southern Thailand, parts of Malaysia, Indonesia, and on the Island of Borneo. As kratom is currently banned in Thailand and Malaysia, a number of Thai varieties are cultivated in Indonesia and exported from there.
What is the Kratom Tree Like?
Mitragyna speciosa can grow up to 80-100 feet tall with a 3-foot diameter trunk. The flowering heads can bear up to 120 florets each and produce yellow flowers. The large, glossy green leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree can reach dimensions of up to 8 inches long and 5 inches wide. They have an ovate-acuminate shape and opposite growth pattern with 12-17 pairs of red veins.
While the kratom tree is evergreen and never loses its leaves completely, it does show some seasonal variation. In the dry season, the tree loses some of its leaves, and in the wet season, they grow more abundantly.
What is Kratom Powder?
The red, green, and white kratom powders that are available in the United States come from the dried leaves, which are harvested at different points of maturity and dried using different amounts of light and dark. The strength and effect of each strain are related to where it was grown and which variety it comes from.
