In a matter of years, cannabidiol (CBD) has taken the world by storm. Despite being non-psychoactive, this powerful cannabinoid packs a healthful punch and has been shown to reduce inflammation, curb pain, and even promote sleep.
However, despite the buzz surrounding CBD, topical CBD creams have been scrutinized by researchers and consumers alike. Typically, these CBD creams or gels are applied to the body; but, unlike oral or sublingual CBD, scientists have found it difficult to evaluate topical CBD oil’s benefits.
What Science is Saying About Topical CBD Oil’s Benefits
CBD as a Topical Treatment for Acne
Because CBD is hydrophobic (non-water-soluble), scientists have estimated that the cannabinoid would have difficulty permeating through the skin. However, many emerging studies with human participants have shown that topical CBD has a wide variety of effective applications.
In a study published in 2018, researchers set out to examine the topical CBD oil benefits for acne. To do this, they created a pure synthetic form of topical CBD and enlisted the help of 23 participants aged 18-65, each of which had moderate to severe acne. For the study’s duration, the research team applied the topical 5% CBD to each participant’s face twice daily.
Surprisingly, the experiment’s early results demonstrated that the 5% topical CBD was effective at treating acne. The researchers noted that the CBD was “well-tolerated” and that “activity in acne has been observed.” After observing topical CBD oil’s benefits for acne, the authors concluded that further research should be conducted on the subject.
CBD for Peripheral Neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy is a painful condition in which damaged nerves disrupt communication between the brain and body, resulting in pain, impaired movement, and altered sensations in the extremities. You might already be familiar with carpal tunnel syndrome which is a form of peripheral neuropathy.
In a 2019 topical CBD research study, researchers assessed the effectiveness of CBD on pain in treating peripheral neuropathy symptoms. They conducted a four week, randomized and placebo-controlled trial and enlisted 29 patients with symptomatic peripheral neuropathy.
During the study, the research team administered a 250mg CBD topical treatment to 15 out of the 29 patients. Afterward, they assessed the participants’ pain using the neuropathic pain scale (NPS) on a biweekly basis to gauge the topical CBD’s benefits.
The authors reported “a statistically significant reduction in intense pain, sharp pain, cold and itchy sensations in the CBD group when compared to the placebo group,” and also noted the lack of adverse events associated with the CBD treatment. They concluded that transdermal CBD provided a “significant improvement in pain and other disturbing sensations in patients with peripheral neuropathy.”
Topical CBD for Inflammation and Arthritis
Arthritis is an inflammatory condition of the joints that can cause pain, discomfort, and impaired movement.
After acknowledging the downsides of current arthritic treatments, one research team sought to explore topical CBD oil’s benefits for arthritis. They noted that topical CBD could have several advantages over traditional arthritic medicines. For one, when administered topically, CBD could bypass the gastrointestinal route and first-pass metabolism, resulting in consistent levels of CBD in the blood. Topical remedies also tend to be more accessible for patients, especially those who have difficulty swallowing pills or tablets.
The same researchers began their CBD research study in 2016. After measuring the baseline inflammation levels of rats with induced arthritis, they applied CBD gels of varying concentrations to observe its effects. They found that the transdermal CBD gel “significantly reduced joint swelling [and] limb posture scores as a rating of spontaneous pain,” indicating that the topical CBD oil benefits were, indeed, effective for arthritis.
The study’s authors also noted that the exploratory behavior of the rats wasn’t affected during the study, indicating that the CBD didn’t cause any type of observable mental impairment. As a result, they concluded by stating that “topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain‐related behaviors and inflammation without evident side‐effects.”
Although this was a rat study, it’s possible that the anti-arthritic benefits of CBD could extend to humans, too.
Topical CBD: Quality is Everything
Even though the scientific jury might be out regarding topical CBD’s exact efficacy, one thing is clear: purchasing the best CBD products is essential. Lower-quality CBD products are not only less likely to work, but in some cases, they might not offer any benefits at all. Here’s what to look for when shopping for your next topical CBD product.
Buy from Trusted Suppliers
To ensure you’re getting the most benefits from your topical CBD oil, always purchase high-quality CBD products from a reputable supplier. Make a point of avoiding sellers who make product claims that aren’t backed by topical CBD research, such as “it cures cancer” or “it will extend your lifespan.”
Look for Added Ingredients
As topical products, CBD creams and salves often contain added ingredients, such as fragrances and other natural additives. Depending on what you’re expecting from your topical CBD, you might want to either avoid or deliberately seek out topical CBD products with added ingredients.
For example, some people are allergic to fragrances found in creams and moisturizers. Others, however, might enjoy the localized relief provided by added ingredients like camphor. Ultimately, consulting your personal preferences and expectations is a great way to maximize your topical CBD oil’s benefits.
