Kratom, Mitragyna Hirsuta & Sakae Naa – Asian Herbs

Asian herbal remedies are well-known worldwide, as native cultures in this region of the world have pioneered many different uses for plants and botanicals. From tea and culinary preparations, to traditional Asian medicine, and even bonsai, Asian herbs and botanicals are many and varied. Kratom (mitragyna speciosa) is native to Southeast Asia, where this plant has evolved into three different varieties and dozens of unique kratom strains. There’s also sakae naa (combretum quadrangulare), kava kava and mitragyna hirsuta, which is a cousin of the kratom plant. Collectively, these Asian herbs and botanicals have been the subject of significant research and in recent years, they have seen a rising popularity in Western cultures.

About These Popular Asian Herbs

Asia has a varied climate, but Southeast Asia—the region where kratom, mitragyna speciosa and sakae naa grow naturallyhas a rather warm, tropical climate. This translates into a long growing season, which is ripe for the development of new varieties and strains. This is particularly the case for kratom, which comes in dozens of different types.

Here is a look at these four Asian plants and their properties.

  • Mitragyna HirsutaMitragyna hirsuta is locally known as kra thum khok and it’s well-known in Southeast Asia for being a kratom alternative. In fact, it’s quite popular in regions where kratom has been banned. Native to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Malaysia, researchers have found that mitragyna hirsuta contains an alkaloid known as mitraphylline—a substance that’s also present in other plants, including kratom (mitragyna speciosa) and cat’s claw (uncaria tomentosa). It’s said that smaller quantities of mitraphylline have stimulant properties, whereas larger quantities are associated with sedation, relaxation, and relief of discomfort. Some enthusiasts have even described mitragyna hirsuta as being “cannabis-like” in nature. At Kratora, we carry dried and crushed mitragyna hirsuta.
  • Kava Kava – Kava kava (or simply, “kava”) is native to the South Pacific islands of Fiji, Hawaii, Polynesia, Tonga, the Samoas, the Solomon Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Vanuatu. It’s a plant that prefers moist, humid, and tropical conditions, with indirect sunlight and loose soil conditions. Native cultures have long enjoyed kava root during ceremonial events. Researchers have found that kava contains kavalactones. It’s the kavalactones that are credited for effects such as euphoria, improved mood, and relaxation. At Kratora, we sell a premium 30% powdered kava extract.
  • Sakae Naa – Sakae Naa (combretum quadrangulare) is another popular kratom substitute, which has gained lots of popularity in Thailand. This plant is native to the wetlands and jungle regions of Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Native cultures said this small tree had magical powers, yet this plant has only become available outside of Southeast Asia in the past few years. Researchers have found the substances contained within Sakae Naa are associated with energy, euphoria and stimulation in smaller amounts, while larger quantities are associated with mild sedative properties. Sourced directly from Southeast Asia, Kratora sells dried Sakae Naa powder.
  • Kratom – Kratom, or mitragyna speciosa, is remarkably diverse as it comes in three basic varieties which are differentiated by the color of the stem and leaf veins. There is white vein kratom, which is said to have energetic and euphoric qualities. Red vein kratom, is generally favored for sedation and relief of discomfort. Green vein kratom features properties that are similar to a combination of both red and white vein. In addition to the three varieties, there are also dozens of different strains of kratom, each with a unique set of properties. These differentials are largely attributed to the fact that kratom grows on different islands in Southeast Asia, each with its own unique environment and ecosystem which has prompted the plant to evolve in different ways. In addition to selling plain kratom leaf powder, Kratora also sells kratom extracts and even kratom stem and veinportions of the plant that have some rather unique properties.

When buying kava or kratom extractsor any botanical extract, for that matterit’s important to remember that the extract concentration does not necessarily bring a linear increase in the potency. For instance, a 50x extract is not necessarily going to be 50 times more potent than plain leaf powder. Instead, this figure indicates the amount of extraction. In the case of 50x, 50 parts have been reduced down to one part, whereas in the case of a 10x extract, 10 parts have been reduced down to one part. Of course, extracts do tend to be far more concentrated than a non-extract, but shoppers should keep in mind that the exact degree of concentration may not necessarily align with the extraction figure. This is true regardless of the plant type or the brand name.
