Native to Southeast Asia, kratom (mitragyna speciosa) is a member of the coffee tree family. The leaves have been used by native cultures for many generations, with each variety having its own unique properties. The three varieties are named for the color of the stem and leaf veins — green vein, white vein, and red vein — while the strains are named after regions where the kratom was first grown or sold. Kratom contains dozens of alkaloids, many of which act  upon the same areas of the brain that are impacted by potent medications, such as opiates.

Red vein kratom is regarded as the most effective calming kratom variety. Some especially popular varieties include red vein Kali kratom and red vein Sumatra kratom.
