The use of topical CBD oil for muscle and joint pain is fairly well known, but this naturally-occurring hemp-derived compound has other benefits for your skin as well. Join us as we explore some of the CBD research studies and science-based benefits of CBD for the skin.
Understanding CBD For The Skin: The Endocannabinoid System
In the human body (and that of many animals as well), the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is the extensive network of cannabinoid receptors that work as a feedback mechanism for pretty much every biological function you could think of — including digestion, sleep, and even reproduction. Composed of CB1 and CB2 receptors, the ECS runs throughout the entire body.
CB1 receptors are found throughout the body from the brain to the nerves, and CB2 receptors are mostly located in the gastrointestinal and immune systems.
When these cannabinoid receptors signal to the brain that something is out of balance, the brain responds by turning enzymes into the endocannabinoids anandamide and 2-AG, which help bring balance back to the bodily system. The skin also produces these cannabinoids when homeostasis is needed. Topical CBD oil can help this natural process by supplementing additional powerful phytocannabinoids (plant-derived cannabinoids) which interact with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the cutaneous layer of the skin.
What Does CBD Help to Regulate?
Most skin problems are a result of an imbalance — for example, too much sebum leads to acne, whereas too little sebum leads to dryness and flaking. Inflammation in the skin creates itchiness, and an over-proliferation of cells can lead to melanoma and other skin cancers.
Just like how CBD oil regulates and maintains our internal ECS, the cannabidiols found in topical CBD oil cream can help restore balance in the skin by supplementing the body’s natural feedback system.
CBD for Skin Helps Balance Oil Production
Acne, officially termed acne vulgaris, is a condition of the skin in which too much sebum is produced and the sebaceous glands become inflamed.
In a 2014 study, researchers applied cannabidiol to human sebocytes and human skin organ cultures to see what effect it would have. The results confirmed that cannabidiol acts as a “sebostatic agent,” meaning that it inhibits the overproduction of sebum. The cannabidiol used in the study also displayed a complex anti-inflammatory action, which, when combined with its sebostatic effects, led the researchers to conclude that topical CBD oil has promising potential in the treatment of acne.
With its sebostatic balancing action, forms of CBD could help with dry skin, too. By balancing out oil production, CBD is thought to not only reduce excessive sebum but also to increase it when your skin needs more oil in the cases of dry skin and dermatitis.
CBD for Skin May Help Protect Against Free-Radical Damage
A lesser-known property of CBD that makes it ideal for use in skincare is its role as a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are especially important for keeping your skin looking and feeling youthful because they encourage the production of collagen — the substance that keeps your skin firm and elastic. Unfortunately, collagen production begins to wane after your late twenties.
While a lack of collagen can lead to signs of aging, most of the damage we do to our skin comes from large amounts of sun exposure and environmental pollutants like smoke from tobacco and fuel exhaust. Apart from using sunscreen and limiting your exposure to smoke, applying topical CBD oil could help reduce the damage caused by free radicals from your external environment. This has the potential to lead to firmer and more youthful skin, although further studies are needed to confirm these effects.
CBD Can Reduce Ongoing Pain in the Joints and Muscles
At a somewhat deeper level, CBD is probably most well-known for its ability to provide relief for chronic pain in the joints and muscles.
In a 2019 study, topical CBD oil was applied by 29 volunteers with peripheral neuropathy in a randomized placebo-controlled trial. After four weeks, the participants who applied the product containing 250 mg CBD/3 fl. oz. felt a significant reduction in intense pain, sharp pain, feelings of cold, and itching sensations. There were no unpleasant side effects reported by the volunteers.
In a 2015 study, rats with induced arthritis had CBD gel applied over four consecutive days at 0.6, 3.1, 6.2, or 62.3 mg/day to test what effect the CBD might have on pain and inflammation. After the four days, the researchers observed a significant reduction in joint swelling and pain indicators and a thickening of the synovial membrane that protects and cushions the joints. As in the first study, there were no unwanted side effects.
Whether or not you have arthritis, this lowering of pain and swelling might also be useful if you’ve injured yourself when playing sports or need to help your joints and muscles recover in general. In any case, the lack of side effects in topical CBD oil studies is encouraging!
More Recent Developments in CBD for Skin Research
Finally, a newer and emerging use for topical CBD oil is the promotion of healthy skin cell renewal and slower development of neoplastic skin diseases — the “malignant lesions” known as squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma. While this field of study is still in its infancy, researchers have already seen that the endocannabinoid system is involved with regulating proliferation and differentiation in the skin. Hopefully, we’ll see a breakthrough in this important area soon!
