Organic CBD: What Does It Mean?

If you’ve stepped into a grocery store in the last several decades, you’re probably familiar with the term organic when it comes to food and beverages. Usually, the organic label denotes products that are produced without the use of genetic modification, pesticides/herbicides, and hormones.

However, the organic label can also apply to plant-based substances like CBD. Because CBD is derived from the hemp or cannabis plant, both producers and consumers can choose between organic CBD oil and non-organic CBD oil.

That said, organic CBD is typically more expensive than its non-organic equivalents, which begs the question: is organic CBD really worth it? Are the differences between organic CBD and non-organic CBD products significant enough to warrant choosing one over the other?

Let’s find out!

What Is Organic CBD?

When applied to substances like CBD oil, the term “organic” can be ambiguous. However, most organic CBD oil is derived from hemp or cannabis plants that are:

  • Grown from untreated hemp seeds (non-GMO)
  • Cultivated in naturally fertilized soil without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides
  • Grown without the use of hormones, crop stimulators, or crop enhancers
  • Non-irradiated
  • Maintained with a minimal amount of biocontrol agents (introducing other organisms such as insects and pathogens into the growing environment to protect the plants as they grow)

As you might expect, growing organic hemp or cannabis for CBD products can be costly and time-intensive. As a result, organic CBD is more difficult to produce, but the end-product has many notable advantages over non-organic CBD.

The Advantages of Buying Organically-Sourced CBD Products

Organic isn’t just a fancy buzzword: when you purchase organically-sourced CBD oil, you’re investing in products that are better for you and the planet. Here are some of the key benefits of buying organic CBD:

  • Increased product safety: organic hemp is grown without the use of chemical pesticides, often resulting in a CBD product that’s safer to consume
  • Improved quality: organic hemp is usually grown in fertile soil, producing a purer, more potent CBD product
  • Sustainably-produced: eventually, the chemicals and pesticides often used during non-organic hemp cultivation will make their way into the environment through runoff. These chemical byproducts can cause devastating damage to various ecosystems. In contrast, organic hemp cultivation is generally much more sustainable and produces less hazardous waste

What to Look for When Buying Organic CBD Oil

Unfortunately, because CBD wasn’t a USDA-certifiable product in the United States until just recently, some CBD vendors have chosen to define the term “organic hemp” themselves. As a result, it’s worth evaluating a CBD vendor’s production techniques to ensure that they’re selling genuinely-organic and high-quality products.

Product Testing

Hemp is a phytoremediator, which means that hemp plants naturally draw toxins and heavy metals from the soil as they grow. Scientists are currently experimenting with using hemp plants to purify contaminated soil. While hemp toxicity issues can be circumvented by cultivating the plant in clean soil, all hemp-derived products — whether organic or not — should be lab-tested to ensure that consumers aren’t getting a heavy dose of soil-derived toxins.

Growing Conditions

By definition, organic hemp-derived CBD should be produced without the use of hazardous agricultural chemicals. Unfortunately, the specificity of that definition hasn’t stopped unscrupulous CBD vendors from using or permitting harsh chemicals during production while still claiming that their products are “organic.”

For instance, a CBD product manufactured without the use of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides might seem organic — but the exclusion of these chemicals might mean that the company is using chemical fertilizers instead. Organic CBD oil and other CBD products should always be produced from hemp grown in naturally-fertilized soil.

Why Aren’t More CBD Products Certified Organic?

Despite its benefits, organic CBD has struggled to find its footing in the United States. Due to certification delays and changing legislation, organic CBD products were scarce in the United States until just recently.

For a product to be certified organic by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), that product must fall under the purview of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the FDA didn’t begin regulating CBD products until mid-2019, which prevented the USDA from certifying any CBD products as organic.

That said, some organic CBD products are still available in the United States through a strange loophole: the USDA has been able to certify hemp or CBD products as organic, as long as they’re international imports. This means that, at present, it’s difficult for American companies to sell USDA-certified organic CBD oil but less challenging for international CBD suppliers.

Don’t worry, though — while it might be hard to find USDA-certified organic CBD products at the moment, American-made organic CBD is gaining traction and consumer interest. For many American CBD companies, all that stands in the way of USDA certification is a rigorous approval process.

Applying for Organic CBD Certification

While the number of organically-certified CBD vendors in the United States is slowly growing, obtaining USDA organic certification is a lengthy and expensive endeavor.

Before a CBD vendor can display the USDA certified badge on their products, they must submit an application (and fees) to a USDA certified agent. The USDA agent will then verify their practices, initiate an on-site inspection, and finally, review the final inspector’s report before issuing approval.

To maintain their USDA organic status, CBD vendors must then authorize annual reviews and inspections to ensure their organic CBD oil production standards are maintained.
