Kratom powder is still fairly new to the Western world but has already caused a stir in the media and even in the government. If you are new to kratom, you might be wondering what kratom is and why it is so controversial. If you have been using kratom for a while, you might also want to know more about the legal situation and how you can get involved. For the new and veteran alike, here is our take on the kratom saga and where its story might be headed.
Once Upon a Tree…
It all began long ago in the jungles of Southeast Asia. A tall tree belonging to the coffee or “Rubiaceae” family grew in abundance, its branches laden with large, red-veined leaves. The Indonesians and Thais called it “kratom,” the Malays called it “ketum,” and the Dutch botanist Korthals named it “Mitragyna speciosa.”
This name has been speculated to come from the shape of the leaves that look like a bishop’s miter, or possibly from spiritual ties to ancient Mithraic cults. While the origin of the name is unknown, the leaves of the kratom tree were revered by local communities for their stimulating properties and chewed and consumed as a traditional tea by farmers and rubber-tappers for the strength and energy to get through long days of hard, manual labor.
The Dawn of Kratom
Over time, other properties of kratom powder were discovered, and in the eighteenth century, kratom started to be used not only by rural workers but also by those seeking to treat diarrhea, chronic coughs, and intestinal illnesses. It was also found that this ancient tree had the ability to help with uncomfortable symptoms associated with the Opium epidemic of the nineteenth century.
In a Land Far Away
Eventually, kratom powder started to become known on other continents, reaching the peoples of Europe and America. Shipments began to go out from Indonesia and Borneo, taking this leaf across the seas to nations where it was quickly adopted for pain relief and stress management.
Dried leaves were ground into kratom powder—green, red, and white— and promoted as strains that could have a distinctive effect. As kratom increased in popularity, however, and entered an unregulated market, some vendors began to sell pure kratom while others started to lace it with hydrocodone and other opioids. Product testing, then, became more important than ever to ensure the availability of quality kratom powder for sale.
Kratom Usage Techniques Evolve
Each strain of kratom powder has a slightly different effect, as a result of the region, climate, and maturation of the leaf. Some attribute these different properties to the powder’s color, whereas some believe it has to do with the tree’s origin.
When making kratom powder, often times the stems and veins of the leaves are separated to be used independently of the powder. Containing a different makeup of alkaloids and properties, it is possible to mix the more economical stems and veins with pure kratom powder to help produce a more robust effect and aroma. Alternating what strain of kratom you use is also advised so that you do not become too adjusted to one kratom powder over time.
The Battle over Kratom
Today, however, a war on kratom powder has taken over. A number of states have already outlawed the sale and possession of kratom and others are looking to do the same. The Federal Drug Administration is trying to undermine one of the key assumptions about kratom in its public health advisory, stating:
“There is no reliable evidence to support the use of kratom as a treatment for opioid use disorder.”
This statement is in direct contradiction to a report published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, which found that kratom was safer than opiates while having a similar analgesic effect.
