It can be hard to decipher what is true and what is not on the internet. If you’re wondering what the truth is about CBD, you’re not alone! With CBD topical and CBD oil online sales expected to grow over 30% in the next year, it’s clear that many people around the world are eager to learn more about how CBD can help with pain, inflammation, fatigue, and more! As of 2018, 62% of CBD users said they relied on cannabidiol to treat a medical condition of some type, and ⅓ of those users stated they used CBD for pain-relief purposes. Wondering if this is the right step for you? Learn what the latest research has to say about CBD and pain to decide for yourself!
Past Research on CBD & Pain
While cannabis has been well-researched, CBD is relatively new to the market. Because of this, there’s not extensive research on the increasingly popular compound or how exactly CBD affects the brain. That said, there has been some in-depth research completed on how CBD and pain are connected.
To begin, science breaks down pain into three basic forms. First, there’s neuropathic pain caused by nerve damage or nerve inflammation. Secondly, there’s nociceptive pain caused by tissue damage or an injury. Finally, there’s centralized pain caused by chronic conditions. Generally, this type of pain is the most difficult to research because it does not show up on diagnostic imaging.
Up until recently, there hasn’t been much evidence to show how CBD and pain relief are related. In fact, CBD was not made legal in the United States until late 2018 following the passage of the Farm Bill. Prior to that, it was classified as an illegal Schedule I Substance. Nevertheless, scientists have still attempted to learn the truth about CBD by testing the compound’s effect in animals. In those studies, CBD proved to work as an anti-inflammatory agent, and it also exhibited an analgesic property. When you look at the make-up of CBD, it’s easy to understand why.
There’s a possibility that CBD interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain. Since serotonin is a chemical involved in feelings such as pain, anxiety, and depression, it could explain why CBD and pain relief seem to be so closely linked. While this is only a hypothesis, there are researchers who firmly believe that CBD provides pain relief.
CBD as an Anti-Inflammatory
If you suffer from an injury or chronic pain, there’s a good chance that inflammation is to blame. By treating the inflammation, you may be able to reduce or eliminate your pain. One of the reasons CBD is believed to be effective is its ability to work as an anti-inflammatory agent.
CBD binds to receptors in your body that control all of the following:
- Sensory perception
- Body temperature
In studies on animals, the specimens who had CBD experienced reduced inflammation. By interacting and binding with the glycine receptors of the brain (one of the key elements of the pain transmission pathway), CBD was able to cloak the body’s pain signals so they were imperceivable to the brain. An additional correlation between CBD and pain relief stems from the anti-oxidant properties of CBD. As a plant product, CBD contains natural antioxidants that may help reduce free radicals in the body, preventing them from causing damage to your bodily tissues and leaving them inflamed.
Studies Involving CBD and Anti-Inflammation
A recent review published in Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry further explored the truth about CBD and pain relief. The study revealed that CBD reduced inflammation throughout different pathways in the body, therefore making it a potentially effective way of treating multiple types of pain.
This could be one answer to why CBD and arthritis relief have become closely linked in recent studies. In 2017, for example, one study on CBD and rats with osteoarthritis showed that in only two weeks, a CBD treatment reduced joint inflammation and prevented new joint pain or nerve damage from occurring in the test specimens.
Mice exhibited a similar positive outcome with a routine CBD regiment. When researchers gave pre-diabetic mice CBD treatment, they had less pancreatic inflammation and, in turn, delayed the onset of diabetes.
As a final example of evidence of CBD and pain relief through anti-inflammation, there was a study done on CBD and acute inflammation of the gut. This time, the study was done on both animals and biopsies of humans. In both cases, the CBD counteracted the inflammation and cut down on the intestinal damage.
Can You Get Pain Relief Through CBD?
Even with all of these studies, however, is there any truth about CBD helping with pain? Only time and more scientific research will tell. With the legalization of medical cannabis in many states across America, however, most people are accepting the fact that cannabis can potentially provide therapeutic relief; that being said, not everyone understands the difference between CBD vs. marijuana, and not everyone wants to experience a high or to seek out a medical cannabis license.
Fortunately, many CBD products come without THC and have little to no risk of a psychoactive “high.” Kratora’s CBD isolate oils, for example, are lab-tested to ensure they are 100% THC free, so you can enjoy all the benefits of CBD without the “high.”
Whether or not CBD works for your pain, however, depends on several factors, including:
The Quality of Your CBD
CBD and pain relief only works if you use a high-quality CBD product. Sadly, not all products are created equal. Depending on the source of your CBD, you could end up with a product that contains more filler than CBD. As a result, it won’t be particularly effective. On the other hand, a premium, all-natural oil — like those at Kratora — will contain the essential compounds thought to help with pain relief.
The Strength of Your CBD
Even if you’re using a high-quality product, you should consider the strength of your CBD. For a stronger effect, you need a more potent CBD concentration. At Kratora, for example, you can purchase any of our CBD oils in 125, 275, 525, or 1025 milligrams concentrations, allowing you to choose the strength that’s right for you.
Kratora prides itself on having a wide selection of high-quality CBD products, kratom powders, and kratom alternatives sourced from local farmers all over the world. To learn more about the truth on CBD, check out our informative blog or join the conversation online on our Facebook or Instagram.
