Sumatra Kratom’s Beginnings

The largest island of Indonesia’s islands and the sixth largest island in the world, Sumatra is home to some beautiful old-growth rainforests and has a population of over 50 million people.

Sumatra kratom — including red vein Sumatra, green vein Sumatra, and white vein Sumatra kratom strains — has grown in the wild in the lush rainforests of Sumatra for thousands of years. The warm, humid climate and high rainfall provide the Mitragyna speciosa trees with just the right conditions for them to flourish. While illegal logging has taken down many of the old-growth wild kratom trees, there are still a number of wild kratom trees left. As part of the ancient rainforests, these trees boast a particularly high alkaloid content.

More Than Just Sumatra Kratom: A Coffee-Growing Paradise

Mitragyna speciosa—or kratom—is part of the coffee family. It comes as no surprise, then, that Sumatra is also prime coffee-growing territory! In the lowlands, you can find Robusta coffee producers, and in the highlands, you can come across Arabica coffee varieties. Unlike kratom, coffee is not native to Indonesia and was taken there from Ethiopia by Dutch colonists in 1699. Now in the twenty-first century, Indonesia is the world’s primary producer of coffee—with Sumatra and Java being the main coffee-producing islands.

Kratom (including Sumatra kratom) is the other main crop produced in Sumatra through a combination of wild kratom harvesting and sustainably-managed plantations. The kratom varieties that are grown in Sumatra include Sumatra kratom, Indo kratom, and Bali kratom (named for the port through which it is shipped to the world). These Mitragyna speciosa plantations are grown from cuttings from the alkaloid-rich rainforest trees and are harvested by local kratom farmers who learned the art of kratom harvesting from their ancestors. By following ancient traditions, our harvesters know how to select the most potent leaves for the highest-quality result!

A Favorable Political Climate

Between coffee and kratom, Sumatra is a veritable hotspot for potent, all-natural ethnobotanicals and much of the country’s income comes from the trading and exportation of these products. This is aided greatly by Indonesia’s laws that allow for the harvest, exportation, and trade of Sumatra kratom—such as red vein Sumatra and white vein Sumatra—without penalties.

This is in contrast to Malaysia where kratom use is strictly banned, and in Thailand where the use and sale of kratom is only allowed for medicinal or research purposes.

While kratom and Sumatra kratom leaves have not been as ubiquitous in Indonesian culture as they have in other parts of Southeast Asia, native Sumatrans have used kratom leaves for pain relief, relaxation, and the treatment of diarrhea for hundreds of years. Some anthropologists think that the popularity of Sumatra kratom in Sumatran culture is reflected in the laid-back rhythm of life that continues to be seen on the island to this day.

Experience the Island Life with Sumatra Kratom from Kratora

At Kratora, you can buy kratom that includes three strains from Sumatra:

The red vein Sumatra variety is harvested from leaves bearing red-colored veins whereas the green and white vein Sumatra varieties come from leaves with green-colored veins. The effects of each strain follow a similar pattern to our other red, green, and white vein kratom strains and are said to be somewhat similar to Borneo kratom varieties.

Try our Red Vein Sumatra for Soothing Relaxation

The red vein Sumatra kratom strain that we stock at Kratora comes from the mature leaves of Sumatra kratom trees which are harvested for their high alkaloid content. Users describe the aroma of this strain as soothing and relaxing with less stimulation than other green vein varieties.

Get Up and Get Going with our Green and White Vein Sumatra Strains

Our green and white vein Sumatra strains are named for the green-colored veins on the underside of the kratom leaf, and the lower amounts of light used in the drying process. Featuring a more stimulating and euphoric aroma, these Sumatra kratom strains are similar to our Thai Green kratom and White Borneo kratom strains.
