Mitragyna speciosa—or kratom—is part of the coffee family. It comes as no surprise, then, that Sumatra is also prime coffee-growing territory! In the lowlands, you can find Robusta coffee producers, and in the highlands, you can come across Arabica coffee varieties. Unlike kratom, coffee is not native to Indonesia and was taken there from Ethiopia by Dutch colonists in 1699. Now in the twenty-first century, Indonesia is the world’s primary producer of coffee—with Sumatra and Java being the main coffee-producing islands.
Kratom (including Sumatra kratom) is the other main crop produced in Sumatra through a combination of wild kratom harvesting and sustainably-managed plantations. The kratom varieties that are grown in Sumatra include Sumatra kratom, Indo kratom, and Bali kratom (named for the port through which it is shipped to the world). These Mitragyna speciosa plantations are grown from cuttings from the alkaloid-rich rainforest trees and are harvested by local kratom farmers who learned the art of kratom harvesting from their ancestors. This is in contrast to Malaysia where kratom use is strictly banned, and in Thailand where the use and sale of kratom is only allowed for medicinal or research purposes.
While kratom and Sumatra kratom leaves have not been as ubiquitous in Indonesian culture as they have in other parts of Southeast Asia, native Sumatrans have used kratom leaves for pain relief, relaxation, and the treatment of diarrhea for hundreds of years. Some anthropologists think that the popularity of Sumatra kratom in Sumatran culture is reflected in the laid-back rhythm of life that continues to be seen on the island to this day.
